Just because temperatures are dipping below 30 degrees, doesn’t mean you have to ditch lipstick in favor of lip balm. A moisturizing lipstick like the new Tarte Color Splash Lipstick needs to replace your usual drying go-to one, and your lips will avoid a chapped crisis. Just take it from me. I’m dedicated to wearing bold lipstick 365 days a year, so I’m not about to let a little snow and dehydrating indoor heating stop me from my life’s mission. Every morning, I scrub my lips (my current fave is the Candied Nectar M.A.C. Lip Scrubtious), and this week, I started reaching for Tarte’s newest lipstick. With 24 shades to choose from, my lips are in a winter wonderland. Plus, they are creamy mattes, so I don’t have to sacrifice my favorite finish in favor of keeping my lips hydrated. In fact, they are part of the company’s Rainforest of the Sea collection, which also includes a foundation and concealer. All make use of the hydrating and restorative powers of water and algae. The latest addition, however, adds lip emollients, olive oil and shea butter, to the mix.
With this in mind, my first impression of the Tarte Color Splash Lipstick was it felt incredibly creamy. For a matte lipstick, that’s kind of surprising. (I’ve been loving the new Rimmel London Only 1 Matte Lipstick lately, but it can be a struggle and a half to apply.) The tip is awesome, too. It’s a slightly rounded curve that hugs lips perfectly for even application that doesn’t stray outside of lips. But if we’re being totally honest here, texture aside, I fell in love with the tube first. The marbled robin’s egg blue-and-white packaging is total vanity candy.
On top of that, the lipstick is also surprisingly pigmented. Maybe it was the texture that threw me off, but I thought it was going to go on more sheer. One swipe, however, gave my lips just the right amount of color. A second coat helps deepen the shade a bit, which is right up my alley. And if you want to want a third one, go ahead. Unlike matte liquid lipstick, it doesn’t matter how many layers you put on. It won’t crumble or pill. It won’t feel thick either. But, like liquid lipstick, it does dry down a bit. Oh, and the pigment stays put. I swatched all 24 shades on my arm, went to a cardio playground, sweated out my body weight, took a shower, and still have faint pink swipes on my forearm. I’m suspecting Popsicle (a magenta) and Berry Mojito (a raspberry) are the culprits. My favorites are more in the brown realm: Boardwalk (a total ’90s brown) and Beach Waves (a greige). The worst part about this lipstick is their summer-inspired shade names. They will have you seriously missing the sun and the sand.
