Making time for working out isn’t easy for actress and mom Hilary Duff, but she commits to scheduling time to exercise as much as possible for the mental and physical benefits. “I think I’m physically fit, but I’m not in the best shape I’ve ever been in,” Duff explains to SELF during a phone interview. “But I have to do it for my brain and to have time for myself to do something that makes me feel strong and is a mental release.”
A normal week may include three sessions at a private gym with a trainer and two cardio climb classes at a fitness studio like Rise Nation in Los Angeles. “I’ll also throw in some yoga or a hike once a week,” Duff tells SELF. “I like to challenge myself.”
A typical training session begins with 20-minutes on a stair-climbing machine or a short run, she explains. Then she’ll move into an intense metabolic interval circuit that involves exercises like hip thrusts, ball slams, and battle ropes to get her heart rate up.
While Duff tries to make time for her regular workouts, there isn’t always time to get ready at home. That’s why she “carries her life,” with her in her gym bag and car, she explains. Here are a few things she keeps on hand to refresh after a sweaty workout:
1. Beauty and skincare necessities.
“The essentials like deodorant and a few things of makeup,” Duff explains. “I have dry eyes,” Duff explains. “I keep Visine in my purse—it’s just part of my routine.” Duff recently teamed up with Visine for their #ScreenOn campaign to help keep eyes healthy during binge-watching TV sessions.
2. An extra outfit—for errands and working out.
“If I’m wearing something to work out, I’ll pack another [fitness] outfit in case that’s what I want to hop back into, so I’m not sitting in sweaty clothes all day.” And that includes a new pair of socks and underwear—which are essential for all-day comfort, but so easy to forget! She’ll also keep a non-workout wardrobe change handy including a tee, jacket, and pair of jeans, she explains.
3. An accessories pouch.
This is a genius idea! Duff explains that she’ll sometimes pack a small accessories pouch to toss in her gym bag to go with whatever she’s changing into after. As someone who gets ready at the gym a few days per week I’ve always struggled with what to do about jewelry—I don’t want to wear it during my workout and if I toss a ring and necklace in a pocket I’m definitely going to forget about it and most likely lose it. A separate pouch to safely stash accessories does the trick!
4. Snack options.
Duff will also keep a bar in her bag “in case I don’t have time to stop.” Her snack bar of choice: RxBars. “The peanut butter is my favorite,” Duff says. “They’re sticky, but I love the concept of [them only containing] a few ingredients, and they totally satisfy.”
