I’m still on my Aussie kick—I’m actually snacking on a Tim Tam as I write this. If you read my last column (if not, read it now here), you’ll know that I am obsessed with this Australian web series called, Starting from…Now. What I didn’t reveal in that article was WHO was the reason I was so drawn to the series in the first place. That reason would be Bianca Bradey.
From the first moment I watched Bianca (who played Emily in the show, which has amassed over 30 million views worldwide at publish time) in a 6-minute episode of SFN, I knew I had to watch more. She is absolutely mesmerizing and breathtaking, both as a woman and as an actor. Sure, for this column, I mostly write about beautiful models and my interactions with them because that’s where most of my inspiration and expertise lie. So, as an actor, Bianca is an exception. Of course she’s beautiful, but her beauty is rivaled by her exceptional talent. And thankfully, there’s so much more of Bianca to see than just in my favorite web series.
I promptly downloaded Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, an indie Aussie zombie horror flick. Not exactly my genre of choice, but I had to watch because she was in it. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked it. Bianca’s “Brooke” was a study in badassery at its finest. (Angelina JolieLara Croft, watch your back!) Wyrmwood was her breakout role. So thus far, I’ve seen Bianca as a surly, yet sensitive, no bullshit-taking lesbian and then as an ass-kicking, zombie-controlling, heroic anti-hero. I needed to see what else can she do. Turns out it’s more like, what CAN’T she do?
Here’s a taste of what else Bianca’s acted in—and what’s next, because I know you love a good list.
A Night of Horror. A series of nine short horror films, all interwoven through Bianca’s character, who prowls through a dark and strange art gallery as each exhibit morphs into a different short. (Shit. Another horror film? I’m scared already.)
We Will. A powerful, tear-jerker of a short film that advocates Australian marriage equality. Bianca plays one half of a lesbian couple, depicted like any other couple, and follows their journey from their first date up until their wedding day.
A Private Matter. A multi-award winning short film dealing with LGBT issues. Again, Bianca is part of a lesbian couple, this time dealing with her partner’s conservative, rural-raised family. Haven’t seen this one yet, but the trailer gave me chills.
The Osiris Child. With a 2017 release date, this sci-fi is set in the future during a time of interplanetary colonization and follows an unlikely duo who are forced to race against an impending global crisis. This film boasts an ensemble cast that also includes Kelan Lutz, Isabel Lucas and Rachel Griffiths.
And lastly, Rendel. Touted as Scandanavia’s first full-length superhero movie, also scheduled for a 2017 release. Yay, more fight scenes and ass-kicking from Bianca! Definitely on board to watch this one. (I’ll say it again, Angeline Jolie, look out!)
But Bianca’s talents are not just in front of the camera. “I’ve been getting more inspired to work behind the scenes lately. I want to create and produce my own stories. I want to tell stories about women, for women and by women. It’s important for me that we have a voice in this industry, and so all the women out there have films that they can relate to, and identify with,” she tells Allure. Boom. The future is female, in case you missed the memo.
Describing herself as “painfully shy” when she was growing up, she still managed to love acting, even as a kid. “There’s definitely a misconception from people that actors are quite outgoing, and love being the center of attention. I think there are a lot of us who don’t want that. It’s about exploring human beings and their relationships,” she says. I find it fascinating. It constantly surprises and excites me.”
Surprising and exciting—fairly common descriptors, but both ones I’d use to describe Bianca. I can’t wait to see what else this talented Aussie has up her sleeve. In short, and in Aussie-speak, Bianca Bradey is a legend. Looking forward to seeing her slay every role that comes her way and to kick more ass, zombie or otherwise.
