Your first period is a big deal. It’s anxiety-inducing enough for a girl to just get her period, save all the period-stigma that might make someone feel like they have to hide it. Studies have even shown that periods cause grown women (let alone teens) anxiety, with one recent survey reporting that one in five women throughout the world “have avoided professional and personal engagements for fear of being ‘caught’ with their period.”
All this negativity surrounding periods is why Shelly, a mom from Jacksonville, Florida, threw her 12-year-old daughter, Brooke Lee, a surprise “first period” party, turning the potentially scary experience into a total female-empowerment celebration. If only the whole world were this cool about periods, right?
The period party Shelly threw for her daughter included a red and white “congrats” cake, tampons, and pads. When Brooke’s cousin, 17-year-old Autumn Jenkins, posted photos of the first period party on Twitter, it, expectedly, quickly went viral. “Brooke started her period today & my family is super extra 😂😩,” Autumn wrote.

Over 13,000 people and counting have retweeted the post, with most enthusiastically adding their praise for the idea of a period party. Some people even reminded naysayers that while the period party might seem too “extra,” periods aren’t fun, so why not make them more bearable with a little cake?

Brooke’s mom Shelly told BuzzFeed News, she organized the party because Brooke “was anxious” about getting her period. “I wanted to make this event a little more fun!” she added.
Brooke said the event wasn’t too out of the ordinary for her family, calling the party “normal.” Cheers to your first period, girl! We’re raising a slice of cake in your honor—and in honor of your awesome mom, too.
