Winter isn’t coming anymore. It’s here, but a shade typically associated with spring, and sun, and happiness is arguably the most popular makeup color of the season, surpassing even the dark lipstick trend. Defying old-school beauty rules, peach makeup has become a constant presence the past couple chilly months. We’ve seen it in palette launch after palette launch (shout out to the Too Faced peach palettes and KVD’s Pastel Goth), all over the red carpet, and even on the runway for several Spring 2017 couture shows. So what’s all the fuss over this fruit-inspired shade? To put it simply, it looks incredible on everyone. No matter how fair or deep your complexion, peach gives you a warm, yet skin-brightening glow. To fully understand the hype, we asked three celebrity makeup artists why peach makeup is so damn flattering, and how to pull off one of the biggest trends of the moment.
From a color theory standpoint, peach basically contains every undertone under the sun. “It’s [a mix of] pink, orange, red, and yellow,” makeup artist Joseph Carrillo, who has worked with Alexa Chung, Portia Doubleday, and Lily Rabe, tells Allure. “These are all colors we look for when trying to find the perfect foundation shade.” With all those tones combined, peach becomes universal. (If only foundation could be that way, right?) It’s also the warmest of all the pastels, so it can make even the oldest person on earth look youthful and fresh (and the oldest person on earth is 117).
Trying to find your perfect shade of peach is just as easy to understand. Peach and skin tones run on a parallel spectrum. “Generally speaking, the fairer your skin tone is, the softer color of peach you should go for,” Min Min Ma tells Allure. “The same rule applies for dark-skinned girls. The darker you are, the deeper you can go. Think deep corals, apricots, and even bright oranges.”
If you’re going for a peach lip look, Carrillo and Ma both suggest complementing it with gold eye shadow (lavender, gray, or beige are also great options). As for specific lipsticks to try, we love the Bite Beauty
Multistick in Praline, Too Faced Melted Matte in Feelin’ Myself, and the Maybelline New York Color Sensational Inti-Matte Nudes in Peach Buff.
For shadow, you just need to scroll through Instagram for a good minute or so to find some inspo. You can discover some of our favorite shadows here, and some of our favorite looks using the new Kylie Cosmetics Royal Peach palette here. However, not all of the looks you see are totally realistic for everyday wear. We’re sad to report that you can go overboard on the peach makeup trend. “If you apply full-blown Instagram peach makeup, you’ll be serving up peach cobbler, mama,” Carrillo warns. “And that’s a mess in a dress.” Noted.
