Gold might not be the most obvious lip color, but according to Pinterest, it’s one of the most popular color trends right now. Searches have increased 29 percent, with Jouer Lip Creme in Papaye basically taking over the Pinterest feed of all makeup lovers. This particular liquid lipstick has been repinned more than 187,000 times, so I decided to try it out myself to see what all the hype is about.

By the time Jouer Lip Creme in Papaye landed on my desk, I found myself itching to apply it to my lips immediately. I had, by then, seen countless photos of golden lips on Pinterest, and I couldn’t wait to give off a glow of my own. My metallic lips would sparkle as bright as the star on top of a Christmas tree. This stuff might even put me on the level of Pat McGrath’s infamous glitter lip—or so I hoped. Pinterest identified Jouer Lip Creme in Papaye as a trending product around Valentine’s Day, owing the spike to the fact that all eyes will be on your lips for date night. Meanwhile, I was just hoping for a lipstick that would get me compliments around the Allure office (a big deal when you have coworkers who prefer wearing black lipstick over going on dates.)

When I finally did apply the liquid lipstick, which has been a best-seller since launching in 2016, my gold lip fantasy didn’t come true. I’ve never thought of my skin as golden, but this lip color blended in with my pale face, washing me out in a weird and unexpected way. I imagine it would stand out better on a darker skin tone, but for me it just didn’t work—at first that, is. Determined to achieve Pinterest-level makeup, I tested Papaye as a lip topper over a few of the colors I have in rotation right now. When I applied it over Huda Beauty Liquid Matte in Gossip Girl, I ended up with an enviable bright magenta lip that turned gold as the light hit it. If you’re looking to get the effect in the photos all over Pinterest, I’d suggest layering Papaye over a light coral, like Winky Lux Lip Velvet in Smitten.

While it took a few tries to get Papaye just right, the Jouer Lip Creme formula made it worth the wait. This liquid lipstick contains coconut oil, so it smells amazing as you spread the smooth formula across your lips. It dries down to a matte finish but doesn’t make your lips feel chapped—whether you use it as a lip topper or apply it on its own. While I’ll probably save Papaye for a special occasion, Jouer’s lip creme in Bronze Rose, a deep metallic berry shade, is my new go-to work lipstick. The long-lasting formula—we’ve named previously called it a lipstick that actually stays put—has already survived many Starbucks trips and long meetings. While this lipstick has been known to sell out quickly, you can your own for $18 at now.
