The 2017 Oscars are a big night for Emma Stone: Not only is she nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Mia in La La Land, but the much-celebrated film is also up for a whopping (and potentially record-breaking) 14 awards.
And the actress dressed accordingly: Stone stepped out on the Oscars red carpet looking drop-dead gorgeous in a 1920s, flapper-inspired look. She wore a gold fringed Givenchy gown, a statement red lip, and soft waves in her signature red hair. At first glance, the whole ensemble is nothing short of perfection and destined for best dressed lists everywhere.
But if you take a closer look, Stone’s Oscars look is much more than just a lesson in red carpet slay-age: Her ensemble carries an almost-hidden, political, feminist statement, as well. On her left shoulder, right beneath the strap of her gown, Stone is wearing a gold Planned Parenthood pin.
It’s easy to miss the pin at first glance, as it nearly blends in with her shimmery gold gown. But once you catch a glimpse of the reproductive-rights organization’s logo on Stone’s Givenchy gown, it becomes nearly impossible to ignore. And Stone was not the only celeb to step out on the Oscars red carpet with the pin as an accessory: Dakota Johnson sported the same Planned Parenthood pin on her Gucci clutch for the evening.
The displays of support for Planned Parenthood come at a critical time, as legislators in Congress have vowed to defund the organization. Planned Parenthood provides reproductive health services, education, and resources for millions of patients.
The Planned Parenthood pins weren’t the only accessories-turned-political statements at the 2017 Academy Awards: Ruth Negga, Karlie Kloss, Busy Philipps, and Lin-Manuel Miranda all wore blue ribbons in support of the American Civil Liberties Union.
