What’s one to do when you’re onstage during the biggest gaffe in Academy Award history? Take a page from Ryan Gosling’s book and do the only thing you can: Laugh.
The Oscar-nominated actor watched in disbelief—much like the rest of the world—Sunday night as La La Land was incorrectly given the Best Picture award before it went to the correct winner, Moonlight. Most of the audience, let alone the actors onstage, could barely believe what was unfolding—including La La Land stars Gosling and Emma Stone.
Viewers captured the two actors’ faces as they learned the true winner of the Oscar, and it seems they both were momentarily shocked (as they should be), especially Gosling, who broke down in laughter at the huge mix-up.
At first, he looked uncomfortable learning the truth.
And then he couldn’t help but laugh.

Meanwhile, Stone (who won for Best Actress earlier in the evening) was visibly stunned, repeating “Oh my God.” Us too, Emma.

Of course, both actors were incredibly gracious in the flub, welcoming the cast of Moonlight onto the stage and congratulating them with hugs. Can we at least give them “Best Sports” Oscars? (Moonlight ultimately took home three Oscars Sunday night, while La La Land snagged six golden statuettes.)
Backstage after the commotion, Stone admitted that she felt Moonlight deserved the honor for being such a groundbreaking film.
“I f*cking loved Moonlight,” she said per Entertainment Weekly. “God, I love Moonlight so much! I’m so excited for Moonlight!”
“And of course, it was an amazing thing to hear La La Land. I think we all would have loved to win Best Picture. But we are so excited for Moonlight. I think it’s one of the best films of all time. So I was pretty beside myself.”
