Google is already your first stop for info on, well, anything, but now, the search engine is making a change to become your go-to for style inspiration, too. On Thursday, Google Image Search announced the launch of “Style Ideas,” a new feature that will provide users searching for fashion-related products with “inspirational lifestyle images and outfits that showcase how the product can be worn in real life.”
Julia Enthoven, associate product manager at Google, explains in a blog post that “Style Ideas” will allow users to visualize whatever item they’re perusing in a street-style context. Sort of like Pinterest, no?
Enthoven writes, “With style ideas, you can see real-life options of what bag and jeans look stellar with those red high heels you’ve been eyeing. Or if running gear is more your speed, no sweat—workout ensemble ideas are just a tap away.”
Another aspect of the new feature: Google will show users items similar to the ones they’re searching for, which could be useful for scouting those covetable fashions at a lower price. According to TechCrunch, the images shown in both “Style Ideas” and as “similar items” are determined by an algorithm, which prioritizes images that are from sources focused on a specific product type, appear as a complete look, and are from authoritative sites.
These new features are available in the Google Search app if you have an Android phone, and they can be accessed via Safari and Chrome on any mobile device. Now BRB, off to lose ourselves in a very stylish Google Image Search black hole.
