The opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s spring exhibition is usually a star-studded, fashion-forward event—and the 2017 Met Gala didn’t disappoint. This year’s theme honors Rei Kawakubo, the Japanese designer behind the brand Comme des Garçons. And while you’ve probably seen your favorite celebrities wearing outfits stitched with the iconic heart with eyes or heard 2 Chainz rapping about the brand, there is so much more to this designer’s repetiore. Kawakubo is known for her avant-garde runway shows (think: motorcycle jackets paired with tutus). And the brand even collaborated with Nike recently to create a collection of basketball shoes with a high-fashion aesthetic. The 2017 Met Gala attendees paid homage to her sartorial vision by wearing fun prints, exciting textures, and theatrical hairstyles. See all the looks from the red carpet ahead.
